Canyon County's second-largest communi­ty is nestled at the eastern edge of one of the remaining areas of the Treasure Valley that is still primarily agricultural.

 

"Shopping in the growing Canyon County continues to get better with a $10 million renovation at Nampa's Karcher Mall, 1509 Caldwell Blvd. The remodeling includes newly redone storefront facades that will bring new stores into the area. Adjacent to the mall area you'll find new restaurants such as the family favorite Red Robin and a 14-screen Edwards theater megaplex on the west side of the mall. Popular stores at the mall include KB Toy Store, Helen's Gifts & Flowers, Emporium and The Bon Marche", Dana Oland

 

"Caldwell is home to Albertson College of Idaho, a school U.S. News and World Report repeatedly has named the best in the West.

 

Caldwell also is home to a successful profes­sional rodeo, a renowned series of fine arts per­formances and the annual Canyon County Fair and Festival.  If the new millennium, Caldwell is in transition as civic leaders strive to create a nurturing atmosphere for business and industry that will complement the city's still thriving agricultur­al base.  Caldwell's airport is poised to become one of the regions finest for its size, and a new industrial park is taking shape at the city's northeastern edge.

 

Caldwell’s growth rate is increasing as more people realize that the city offers a fam­ily-friendly environment, an easy commute to Boise, and housing prices that compare favor­ably with those of Nampa and Boise.  Results of the 2000 Census are expected to show Caldwell's population 'nearing the 30,000 mark.

 

Boise is competing with other cities for industrial park development.  “Caldwell in Canyon County is installing water lines and wastewater disposal pipes to its new 60-acre industrial park on the east side of the city.  The majority of the funding for the Caldwell Park, $1.37 million, came from an economic development grant from the U. S. Department of Commerce, Caldwell Mayor Garret Nanoolas,” as reported by John Tucker.  Caldwell, permit values jumped from $500,000 for commercial projects in the first quarter last year to 2.2 million during the first quarter of 2000.

 

Caldwell is home to the oldest four-year institution of higher learning in Idaho, Albertson College, founded in 1891.  As of September 2000, about 750 students were enrolled.  Albertson College strategic plan has been designed to increase enrollment to around 1,300 students.  At about $20,000.00 per student, that would give the college an annual budget of $26 million, compared to $15 million now."  As reported by Jennifer Gallagher Oxley of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.
